What is an
Immobilizer?
An immobilizer is an electronic security system designed to prevent a machine or vehicle from being started without valid authorization. The starting process is only enabled after the operator has authenticated using an i-button, RFID tag or card, or a PIN code keypad.
Depending on the selected authentication method, the immobilizer ensures that only authorized users can access and operate the machine. This not only enhances security, but also provides valuable control and insight within Asset Management.
The primary objectives of an immobilizer within Asset Management include:
Theft Protection
Construction sites and remote locations are often targets for thieves. Machines and vehicles left unattended at night are particularly vulnerable to theft. An immobilizer prevents unauthorized use and reduces the risk of theft.
Access Control
Immobilizers provide the ability to manage access to machines and vehicles, allowing only authorized drivers to start the equipment.
Prevention of Unauthorized Use
By controlling the starting process, immobilizers prevent unauthorized use of machines and vehicles, such as joyriding or unauthorized use outside working hours.
Immobilizer types
There are different types of immobilizers available, each with specific features and levels of security. A common distinction is based on certification and attack resistance:
Non-certified Immobilizers: Typically interrupt the starter motor or fuel supply, offering a basic level of security but may be less resistant to targeted attacks.
Certified Immobilizers Class W1: Interrupt both the starter motor and fuel supply, designed to be at least 5 minutes attack-resistant.
Certified Immobilizers Class W2: Provide the highest level of security by interrupting both the starter motor and fuel supply, designed to be at least 15 minutes attack-resistant.
Class W3: A Class W3 security system is a combined security solution in which a Class W2 immobilizer is complemented by a tracking system.
