How does it work?

The Slipperiness Monitoring System (GMS) uses smart IoT road sensors that continuously collect accurate information about the road surface and the surrounding environment. These sensors are strategically installed and deliver real-time data that is essential for the timely detection and management of slippery conditions. The system is not only suitable for roads, but also highly valuable for managers of train platforms, airports, and other large public areas where safety and accessibility are critical during winter conditions.

One of the key functions of the IoT road sensor is measuring both the surface temperature and the underlying ground temperature. Thanks to an additional cylinder at the bottom of the sensor, the system measures not only the surface temperature but also temperatures in deeper layers. This combination of measurements is crucial for reliably assessing the risk of freezing and for accurately planning preventive and de-icing actions.

In addition, the GMS includes a conductivity sensor that detects the presence and effectiveness of salt on the surface. The system determines whether sufficient de-icing material is present to prevent slippery conditions and automatically generates an alert when additional action is required.

The efficiency of the GMS is further enhanced by the integrated transmission unit, which sends measurement data to a central platform every five minutes. This ensures that operators always have access to up-to-date insights. Thanks to its fully battery-powered design, the system has a lifespan of up to seven years, providing a durable and low-maintenance solution, even in locations where fixed infrastructure or cabling is limited.

A major advantage of the GMS is the ability to deploy a dense network of sensors at an affordable cost. This allows local variations in conditions to be monitored accurately and enables targeted intervention. For roads, platforms, airports, and large public areas, this results in better coordination of de-icing operations, reduced unnecessary deployment, and a clear improvement in safety for road users and visitors.

While traditional slipperiness monitoring systems are often limited in flexibility and sensor density, the GMS offers a modern and future-proof approach. With real-time monitoring, advanced temperature and salt measurements, and a long battery life, the system is a powerful tool for effective winter condition management.
